This group of wood sculptures called “Burned Shadows”, I made using the fire as the main instrument. The experiment worked better on soft woods (spruce wood), where the effects of the fire on the wood fibre were spectacular.
A part of these sculptures is made up of humanoid, candle-like shapes, roughly outlined by means of a chain saw, pierced with twisted spike nails and afterwards polished by the fire. The characters represented have a kind of fluid byzantine features, tortured bodies and disfigured unrecognizable faces; as a whole, they maintain however an aesthetic appearance - the aesthetics of the human suffering, of martyrdom, which has been developed in the universal consciousness over time.
